The political landscape of Pakistan, particularly the province of Sindh, is mourning the loss of a towering figure, Agha Siraj Durrani. A senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and former Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Durrani passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 72 in Karachi. His demise, following a prolonged illness, has cast a pall of grief over political circles across the nation.

Reports indicate that Durrani had been battling a brain hemorrhage for approximately a month, which led to his hospitalization. While his condition initially showed signs of improvement, it unfortunately deteriorated again in recent days. Doctors confirmed his passing, attributing it to a combination of the brain hemorrhage and chronic kidney disease, for which he had been receiving intensive care.

A Legacy Forged in Decades of Public Service :

Born on October 5, 1953, in Shikarpur, Agha Siraj Durrani's journey in politics spanned over four decades, marked by unwavering dedication to the Pakistan Peoples Party and the people of Sindh. He received his early education at St. Patrick's High School in Karachi and later pursued a law degree from Sindh Muslim Government Law College, laying the foundation for a distinguished career.

Durrani's political career began in the 1980s, and he was first elected as a member of the Sindh Assembly in 1988. Throughout his illustrious career, he served as a provincial minister three times and held the esteemed position of Speaker of the Sindh Assembly on two separate occasions, from May 31, 2013, to May 24, 2024. His tenure as Speaker was widely recognized for his efforts in strengthening the provincial assembly and upholding democratic values.

News of Agha Siraj Durrani's passing has evoked a wave of sorrow and condolences from prominent political figures across Pakistan. President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep grief, paying tribute to Durrani's extensive political and public services and acknowledging his pivotal role in strengthening democracy and serving the people of Sindh.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended his heartfelt condolences, recognizing Durrani's significant contributions as Speaker of the Sindh Assembly and stating that his services to politics and public welfare would always be remembered. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah described Durrani as a dedicated, loyal, and principled leader of the PPP, highlighting his vital role in strengthening the Sindh Assembly and democracy in the province.
